Scylla is meant to visualize the perfectionist obsession and anxiety surrounding appearance. The seashell shoulder guards and pearl chains that flow beneath it resemble both armor and a dress. This coexistence of strength and vulnerability symbolizes the entrapment of trying to keep up with the pressure of showcasing and maintaining beauty in society. Inspired by the Korean expression “a seashell does not rust”, the shell has an unchanging firm exterior and the capacity to endure hardship while nurturing greater beauty (the pearl). No matter how hard a shell there is, there is always a tender part within. Human beings are never one-dimensional: only when we look at someone’s inner and outer character together is the only way to fully understand the person.
